A two-month-old boy who was born prematurely after his mother suffered a fatal blood clot died in his sleep just weeks later, an inquest has heard. Dexter Khan-Barnes was born at just 32 weeks after being delivered by emergency caesarean section when his mother, Laura Barnes, developed the clot. He remained in hospital on the neo-natal unit, but was eventually discharged into the care of his father, Shane Khan, six weeks after his birth on May 29, 2022. An inquest at Blackburn Old Town Hall heard the baby boy had been seen by a nurse at his father's house in Rishton, near Accrington, Lancashire, on July 29 and no concerns had been raised. But in the early hours of the next morning Mr Khan found his son unresponsive, and he was tragically pronounced dead hours later, with a post-mortem failing to determine a cause of death, Lancashire Live reports. At Wednesday's hearing the court was told by Laura's mother, Jennifer Barnes, that her daughter had suffered a stroke in the months prior to her death and the premature birth of Dexter. She paid tribute to Laura, revealing she had always wanted to be a mother, and she had been reunited with her son after missing the chance to be together in their own lifetimes. The court heard Dexter's father had prepared two feeding bottles for the night ahead, taken the baby upstairs and placed him on a bed next to his 14-month-old brother. Coroner Richard Taylor said Mr Khan had laid down next to Dexter at 4am and woken up again around an hour-and-a-half later to find his son's arms were limp and his eyes discoloured. He called an ambulance and despite the best efforts of medics who rushed him to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, he was pronounced dead the same morning. Mr Taylor said a post-mortem found no evidence of prior illness or injuries that could have contributed to his death, and no cause of death could be found. Summing up the evidence, Mr Taylor said: 'In these circumstance, it is not possible to completely exclude accidental air obstruction as having caused to contributed to Dexter's death. As such, the cause of death remains unascertained.'
He concluded: 'Dexter Khan-Barnes died on July 30, 2022 at Royal Blackburn Hospital having been found unresponsive at his home in the bed he shared with his brother.'
