A mum has died of bowel cancer after being refused a face-to-face appointment, her family have said. Sharan Kullar contacted her GP several times last year due to suffering from fatigue and weight loss, her relatives said. They claim she was denied the chance to see her doctor in person, instead making do with phone appointments due to the coronavirus pandemic, Birmingham Live reports. The mum-of-two was then diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and was prescribed anti-anxiety medication. The 34-year-old went on to air her concerns to her doctor on 'several occasions' and even said she feared she had bowel cancer. Her family claim that this was immediately dismissed, as Sharan did not meet the 'usual' characteristics. It wasn’t until loved ones encouraged her to go to A&E in December 2020 that her worst fears were confirmed. “Her heart rate was very high and her body was losing a lot of blood," the family said in a statement.
"After several tests she was advised that she would be kept in for further assessment. Over the next few days, she underwent two blood transfusions, several scans and tests and a colonoscopy. On December 21, Sharan was told that she had stage 4 bowel cancer which had spread to her liver and lungs. The cancer was most concerning in her liver due to the damage it was causing and how much swelling there was. All alone in hospital, she spoke with consultants and palliative care nurses, her mind was fried. Only four days before Christmas and having been away from her children for three days, she was desperate to come home. She was discharged later that day. She was determined to fight, she was not ready to leave her children.â€
Sharan was put on pain medication which often left her confused and drowsy. She was scheduled to see an oncologist on January 20, but sadly died two days before. The beloved mum died just four weeks after receiving her cancer diagnosis. Sharan’s loved ones are now celebrating her 34 years of life by completing 34 challenges and raising money for Bowel Cancer UK. This will end with a 35km walk on Tuesday, October 12 - what would have been her 35th birthday. The walk will start in Wolverhampton City Centre and end at Birmingham City Centre. So far, the JustGiving page has raised over £21,000. The page states: “Sharan’s passing came so unexpectedly to us, and it happened so quickly that we’re still trying to process it. We want to raise as much money and awareness as we can to make sure no one else has to suffer in this way. So come on, dig deep and help us beat cancer and donate.â€
