A pregnant teenager is fighting for her life after the car she was travelling in crashed with a tram in Wolverhampton city centre. Emergency services including medics, firefighters and police were called following a collision at around 6.30am on Thursday. A teenage girl was found in a 'life-threatening' condition and given advanced trauma care at the scene before being rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. The driver of the car, a teenage boy, was also treated for injuries not believed to be serious and taken to hospital. Both casualties were the two occupants of the car that collided with the tram at the junction of Bilston Street and Piper’s Row, reported BirminghamLive. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 6:32am to reports of a collision involving a car and tram at the junction of Bilston Street and Piper’s Row, Wolverhampton. We sent two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car. On arrival, crews found a teenage girl in a life-threatening condition. Staff worked quickly to administer advanced trauma care to the patient at the scene and on route to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. The second occupant of the car, a teenage boy, was treated for injuries not believed to be serious and was conveyed to New Cross Hospital."
Fire crews were needed to help get the pregnant teenager out of the car. A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called at 6.39am on Thursday, September 16 to reports of a road traffic collision between a car and a tram. Five firefighters from Wolverhampton station attended the incident along with colleagues from West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service. The driver of the car was able to extricate himself before our firefighters arrived. On advice of paramedics, we assisted a pregnant passenger, who was not trapped by injuries, from the car who was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and the car was made safe by our firefighters."
Major traffic delays have been caused by the incident as Bilston Street Island was blocked with motorists diverted via the A41 while commuters have been advised to avoid the area. Further tram services between The Royal and Wolverhampton St George's have been suspended. West Midlands Metro stated: "Due to road traffic accident, trams are unable to run between The Royal and Wolverhampton St George's. Trams are still running with delays between The Royal and Bull St. Travel to Royals for trams to Bull Street."
